Iraqi prisoners protest over wave of executions by Maliki’s government

Prisoners in the Iraqi prisons of Taji and Abu-Gharib staged strikes in protest to the recent wave of executions by Nouri Maliki’s government, al-Rafidain TV reported. The prisoners rejected Maliki’s disagreement with the public amnesty law and terrorism charges, calling on the international community and human rights organizations to stand against this killing spree and imminent execution of 300 prisoners.
The prisoners stressed the Iraqi judicial system is under political influence and the prosecutor’s office has no document proving these allegations. The prisoners added the confessions mentioned in the court were taken from prisoners under torture.
Furthermore, Baghdad TV reported Maliki’s forces attacked and severely beat prisoners in Rassafa Prison. Due to this attack five old prisoners were transferred to the hospital to receive treatment for their injuries.
Following this violence the prisoners went on hunger strike in protest to Iraqi forces’ repressive measures.
