Maryam Rajavi: only way to prevent further killings is to return defenseless Liberty residents to Ashraf

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, declared today that the killings on February 9 proved that the transfer of members of the Iranian resistance from Ashraf to Camp Liberty which was pursued by the United Nations at the behest of Nouri Al-Maliki’s government has been a completely failed project and assurances for the safety and security of the residents of Liberty is only a mirage. She stressed that there is no guarantee of protection and safety for the residents at Camp Liberty and the only way to prevent further killings is to compel the Iraqi government to return 3100 defenseless residents of Camp Liberty to Ashraf, their home for 26 years.

Speaking at a ceremony to pay homage to the victims of the criminal attack by the clerical regime and the Government of Iraq on Liberty on Saturday February 9, which led to the killing of 6 residents and the wounding of 100, Mrs. Rajavi stated the UN Security Council and other international authorities should order the Iraqi government to open the gates of Camp Liberty to lawyers, journalists, parliamentary delegations and US, European and Arab officials so that they can observe with their own eyes the unacceptable situation at Liberty and the dangers threatening the residents.

Several European, American and Arab dignitaries including Sid Ahmad Ghozali, the former Prime Minister of Algeria and Chairman of the Arab-Islamic Committee in Defense of Ashraf, General David Phillips, former Commander of the US Military Police and protection for Ashraf who was stationed at Liberty for several years, and former commander of protection for Ashraf Colonel Wesley Martin, and Tahar Boumedia, a former senior UN official in charge of Camp Ashraf file in Iraq , participated in the international event in solidarity with the residents of Ashraf and Liberty.

The US speakers strongly criticized Martin Kobler, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, and called him an accomplice in this hideous crime. They stressed that Martin Kobler has truly facilitated and paved the ground for the forcible relocation of the residents from Ashraf and the February 9 attack against the residents by deceiving the international community in 2012 about the situation at Liberty and approving the measures of Nouri Al-Maliki’s government in imposing unlawful pressures and violating the most basic rights of Liberty residents. They underscored the necessity of returning the residents to Ashraf, and reiterated that it would be harmful to hold further talks with Martin Kobler and urged the UN Secretary General to replace him with an impartial representative on Ashraf.

The US military commanders who have themselves been stationed in Camp Liberty for years pointed out that due to the high sensitivities which exist in that area of Baghdad, it would have been impossible for terrorists to get close to the region for their act of terrorism against the residents without the cooperation of the Iraqi officials.

Mrs. Rajavi specified in her speech that reliable information from inside the mullahs’ regime indicates that the February 9 attack against Camp Liberty was carried out by the organization of the terrorist Qods force in Iraq, with specific collaboration from inside the Iraqi government. Mrs. Rajavi also stressed that Camp Liberty is located in a completely closed military area near Baghdad International Airport; there would have been no access to this area without definite collaboration from inside the Iraqi government.

The President-elect of the Iranian Resistance pointed out that this cowardly attack on the defenseless Liberty residents illustrates the increasing fear of the mullahs from the growing popularity of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) inside the country, in particular to the expansion of the Resistance network inside Iran. Following the delisting of the PMOI from the US blacklist, this network has been growing in recent months, particularly amongst the youth.
